Distant Calm
Distant Calm
According to Carl Jung, the sea could be seen as a symbol of the unconscious. This resonates with me because when there is change or anxiety I often dream of being uncomfortably near a turbulent ocean or being nearly swallowed up by engulfing waves. The violently tossing waves in the foreground reveal the mysterious darkness of the unknown ocean depths, a symbol of our own deeper unconscious lying below the surface of our conscious thoughts and experiences. However the background has calmer waters reflecting a sunrise, a new dawn and so it brings comfort and hope. A reminder that all things pass, however anxiety provoking or difficult.
